Project closeout — a clean audit trail

The formal closing of a project's safety file — what the 3-step wizard checks, what happens on completion, and how it leaves your compliance record.

5 min read

Projects don't just end — they close. Closeout is the moment you draw a line under the safety file for that project, confirm nothing is open, and archive it for the retention window. WorkSafe's 3-step wizard makes that a repeatable ritual instead of a scramble.

When to run the wizard

  • All work on the project is complete.
  • All open incidents have been closed.
  • All open corrective actions have been closed or explicitly deferred.
  • The last daily FLHA has been closed.

The 3-step wizard

Open the project and click Close out project.

  1. Safety audit — WorkSafe runs a compliance check: open FLHAs, open incidents, open CAs, pending acknowledgments, missing certs. Anything unresolved must be handled before proceeding.
  2. Checklist — the closing user works through the closeout checklist (return of equipment, waste disposal confirmation, site walk, final photos).
  3. Signature — the closing user signs off. Timestamp and identity are captured.

What happens on completion

  • Project state moves to Closed. All forms, incidents, and CAs become read-only.
  • WorkSafe automatically closes every open WorkSkedge task for the project — setup, daily FLHA, control assignments, and pending custom forms.
  • If the company setting Close project in WorkSkedge is enabled, the WorkSkedge project also closes.
  • The full closeout package is retained for the retention window and available for auditor download.
